TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to bounce and catch a ball at the waist with two hands.

IMPORTANCE
Bouncing and catching a ball at the waist with two hands is important because it improves your ball control skills and your hand-eye coordination.

When bouncing and catching a ball at the waist with two hands, it is important to:

EQUIPMENT

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Simon Says. Your goal is follow Simon’s instructions while bouncing the ball with two hands continuously.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will begin as Simon.
  • When I say, “GO!” you must start bouncing your ball.
  • When I say, "Simon says....” you must repeat that action while bouncing the ball.
  • If I do not say, “Simon says” then keep bouncing the ball.
  • Try your best to keep the ball in motion. If it stops bouncing, quickly pick it up and keep going!

Game 1: Play as indicated above. (Simon says, lift one foot up; blink your eyes; do a hair flip; make a dog sound; stick out your tongue; look to the person next to you; sing a song; wiggle your ears; make a fake sneeze sound; say your favorite color; make a selfie face; switch balls with someone; etc.)

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: This is not an elimination game.
  • Approach: The goal is not to “trick” the students, but to keep their ball bouncing.
  • Discussion: Ask students to share what was easy or hard about touching the ball with their fingertips and not their palms while doing what Simon said.

EQUIPMENT

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Stop ‘n Go. Your goal is to bounce and catch your basketball at your waist with two hands as you make your way to the other side of the court to reach the traffic light.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, you must line up on the baseline shoulder-to-shoulder with your basketball between your feet.
  • When I say, “Green light!” bounce, catch and walk forward.
  • When I say, “Red light!” your feet, body and ball must stop moving.

Game 1: Students walk, bounce and catch on green light.
Game 2: Incorporate a “blue light” to go backwards, an “orange light” to go sideways and a “purple light” for dance party.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Remind students that this is not necessarily a race. It is important to go at a pace that is personally challenging, but allows you the ability to stop quickly.
  • Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw doing a good job at catching the ball with both hands.

  • The tagger will go out and try to tag everyone else.
  • If you get tagged then you will sit on the line on your basketball and wait for the next round.
  • You must stay on the lines while running. You also must turn around if you get to a down player (you can’t
  • go around a player that is seated on a line).
