TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to dribble while walking.

IMPORTANCE
Dribbling while walking is important because it helps you dribble the ball down the court at any speed to get away from an opponent as well as get open for a shot on the basket.

When dribbling while walking, it is important to:

static1.squarespace.png

1. Dribble the ball in front and slightly to the side of your body.

2. Touch the ball with your fingertips (not your palm).

Today we are Warming Up before our games. Your goal is to follow Coach and listen to the instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • When I say, “GO!” run in the different animal movements from the baseline to the end line.
    • Run like a turtle (run slowly and put your arms behind your back)
    • Run like a cheetah (run as fast as you can)
    • Run like a giraffe (put your arms together above your head to make a long neck)
    • Run like an elephant (put your arm out in front of your body to make a trunk) o Run like a penguin (put your arms out to the side and waddle)
    • Run like a dog
    • Swim like a fish (use your arms to swim)
    • Duck walk (squat and waddle like a duck) o Bear crawl
    • Hop like a bunny
    •  Leap like a frog

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Stop ‘n Go II. Your goal is to dribble your basketball while walking to the other side of the court to reach the traffic light.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, you must line up on the baseline with your basketball between your feet.
  • When I say, “Green light!” walk forward while you dribble your basketball.
  • When I say, “Red light!” your feet must stop moving but you continue to dribble.
  • You will continue dribbling the basketball the entire game

Game 1: Students walk, bounce and catch on “green light”.
Game 2: Incorporate a “blue light” to go backwards, an “orange light” to go sideways and a “purple light” for dance party.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Remind students that this is not necessarily a race. It is important to go at a pace that is personally challenging, but allows you the ability to stop quickly.
  • Discussion: Ask students to share what was easy or hard about touching the ball with their fingertips (not their palms) when they were bouncing and catching.

Today we are playing Dribble Drop. Your goal is to dribble the ball while walking.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, spread out on the court with your basketball.
  • When I say, “GO!” start dribbling the ball while walking around the court in any direction.
  • You cannot pass the boundary lines.
  • When I say, “DROP!” you must leave your ball and grab another one.
  • You must switch balls with a new student each time “drop” is called.
  • If you stop dribbling your ball, you receive a letter “D” (D-R-O-P).
  • We will begin a new game when one student has received all four letters.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Elimination Round – if a student’s ball stops bouncing he/she is eliminated.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Once a student has reached all four letters, have him/her call out, “DROP” the next game.
  • Discussion: Ask student to share what was easy or hard about dribbling the ball.

Today we are playing Canyons & Mountains. Your goal is to dribble around the mountains and canyons while walking from one side to another.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, stand on either the baseline or end line.
  • When I say, “GO!” you must dribble your ball from one side to the other trying not to step into a canyon or
  • run into a mountain.
  • If you touch a canyon, mountain or another student, you must start over.
  • When you get to the other side, place your ball between your feet so I know that you are ready for the
  • next round.

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: See which team can get to the other side the fastest.
Game 3: Add a defender as the teacher. The defender can knock anyone’s ball out-of-bounds. If a ball is knocked out-of-bounds quickly recover it and resume playing.
Game 4: Divide everyone into two teams – canyons and mountains. Each team has five minutes to turn all the short cones over. The canyon team will turn them upside down and mountain team will turn them right side up. At the end of five minutes count which team has the most.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Discussion: Ask student to share what was easy or hard about keeping their head up during this game.

Today we are playing Orange Squeeze. In this game, we are squeezing the juice out of our oranges (basketballs). Your goal is to see how much juice you can squeeze out of your orange by passing to a partner as the juicer grows larger and larger.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two groups.
  • The students at the baseline will start with the orange first.
  • When I say, “GO!” pass the orange to the partner across from you.
  • If your orange falls into the juicer, quickly retrieve it before it is all squeezed out of orange juice.
  • Once the orange is passed through the juicer, the other side gets a chance to pass it.
  • The juicer will widen at the beginning of each game.
  • You must stay behind the boundary when you are passing or catching.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Students have to make three passes before widening the juicer.
Game 2: Students have to make five complete passes before widening the juicer.
Game 3: Have students rotate each pass – students at the baseline move either one person to the right or left.
Game 4: Elimination round. If your ball drops in the juicer, you are eliminated. You may practice passing with your partner somewhere in the field.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Let students pass and catch the ball at least three times before widening the juicer.
  • Discussion: Ask students to share what was easy or hard about extending their arms as they passed their orange to their partner.

Today we are playing Curry Shoot Around. Your goal is to see how many shots you can make in 5 minutes.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will send you to a basket to shoot at.
  • You will bring your basketball to that side and stand on a dot.
  • When I say, "GO!" you may try shooting from any dot on the court.
  • Once you have shot, rebound the ball and find an empty dot to shoot from again.
  • We will continue this for 5 minutes to see how many shots you can make.

Game 1: Play as indicated above. See how many baskets you can make.
Game 2: Pick up a dot each time you make a basket from a dot. See what basket can pick up all their dots first.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Try to devide baskets on ability level so that less skilled players don’t get hit with the ball.
  • Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw trying their best when shooting.
