WEEKS 9-10 LESSON PLANS
EQUIPMENT
none
TIME
~7 min
SET UP
Dots will be set out in a grid pattern 5 dots wide and 4 dots deep.
INSTRUCTIONS
For stationary warm-ups have the players stand on their dot. For running exercises have them run down the court and back.
High Knees
The players will run down the field and back kicking their knees up as high as possible. This drill is not for speed.
Butt Kickers
Run down and back kicking your buttocks with each stride.
Line Runs
Run down and back touching different lines each time on the floor.
BASKETBALL SCRAMBLE
EQUIPMENT
19 basketballs
1 hula-hoop
SET UP
Divide the class into 2 teams and have them go on opposite sides of the gym. Place the basketballs on the centerline. At each end of the gym place a hula-hoop (as their goal).
INSTRUCTIONS
On “go” the students must run to the center, grab a basketball (only one at a time allowed) and dribble it back to put in their team’s box, run back and do it again. Once all the basketballs are in goals, have each team count how many they have. The team with the most basketballs wins. The students should be encouraged to play defense and try to steal the basketballs from the other dribblers. Once the basketballs are in the goals they may not be stolen.
Note:
Make sure no one hits anyone else!
EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per student
Optional: 20 tall cones
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Double Trouble. In this game, the objective is to dribble your basketball to the other side of the court.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide you into two teams.
- Students standing at the baseline will start with two basketballs.
- When I say, “GO!” the students at the baseline will dribble forward to the midline and back.
- When you return to the baseline give your basketballs to the student behind you.
- We will begin a new round when everyone has had a turn.
Game 1: Students dribble two basketballs at a time keeping the same rhythm (basketballs go down and up at the same time).
Game 2: Students dribble two basketballs alternating rhythm (basketballs go down and up alternating left and right).
Game 3: Students dribble backwards.
Game 4: Students dribble side-to-side.
Variation: Place tall cones in a zigzag pattern. Students have to dribble two basketballs around the cones.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: Remind students that this is not necessarily a race. It is important to go at a pace that is personally challenging, but allows you the ability to keep the ball in control.
- Discussion: Ask students to share what was easy or hard about dribbling two basketballs at once.
EQUIPMENT
6 hula-hoops
1 short cone per student
1 tall cone per student
2 dots
1 basketball ball per student
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Moving Towers. In this game, the objective is to dribble your basketball, collect the necessary supplies and build a tower at the other end of the field.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide you into two teams.
- Before the game begins, you must line up single file with your ball behind your team’s dot.
- When I say, “GO!” dribble to each hula-hoop and pick up a tall and short cone.
- When you reach the last hula-hoop, construct your tower by putting the short cone on top of the tall cone
- while continuing to dribble.
- As soon as a teammate has reached the last hula-hoop, the next teammate may go.
- We will begin a new round once everyone has constructed a tower.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. Children walk while dribbling with both feet.
Game 2: Children dribble with their right foot only.
Game 3: Children dribble with the left foot only.
Game 4: Children must dribble as fast as they can.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: To increase participation and limit wait time, put the hula-hoops closer together.
- Approach: Remind students they should be dribbling at all times.
- Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw trying their best at keeping the basketball at waist height.
TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to play 1 on 1 defense.
IMPORTANCE
Playing 1 on 1 defense is important because it prevents your opponent from scoring.
When playing 1 on 1 defense, it is important to:
1. Get in ready position (feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, slight forward lean).
2. Place your left foot forward to force the offensive player to the left (most people dribble better with the right hand).
3. Mirror the basketball with your left hand and try to knock the basketball loose with your right hand.
EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per 2 students
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing Shadow. In this game, the objective is to get past the defensive student and make a basket.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide you into two groups - offense and defense.
- Before the game begins, line up behind your designated marker cone.
- When I say, "GO!" defense will sprint towards offense, remaining an arm's length away from each other.
- The offense must start dribbling to the opposing team’s basket.
- The defense cannot touch or steal the ball.
- The offense must try and lose the defense and make a shot.
- After the defense makes it back to the end line, they will then join the offensive line.
- We will begin a new game once everyone has a chance at being offense and defense.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Have students dribble with their non-dominant hand.
TEACHING TIPS
- Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw doing a good job at getting in the ready position while on defense.
EQUIPMENT
1 hula-hoop per 3 students
1 fuzzy ball per 3 students
1 blindfold per 3 students
1 short cone per 3 students
STORYLINE
Today we are playing No Look Basketball. Your goal is to work together with your teammates to score a basket in your team’s hoop.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide you into groups of three (basket, thrower, guide).
- One of you will be the basket and will stand about five feet away from the thrower and hold a hoop
- outwards and flat so that it represents a basket.
- One of you will be the thrower and will stand with your eyes closed, or blindfolded, and will throw the ball
- into the basket when ready.
- One student will be the guide and will help the thrower by either using words or moving their hands.
- Once the thrower makes three baskets, then switch roles with your partners until you have all had a turn
- being a basket, thrower and guide.
Game 1: The guide can touch a thrower’s hands. The basket can move the hoop.
Game 2: The basket cannot move the hoop and must remain stationary.
Game 3: The guide can only help by using their voice.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: If students can be trusted, consider having them choose a group of three by themselves.
- Safety: Remind students to throw underhand. Explain why throwing overhand might lead to injuries.
- Discussion: Ask students to share why being honest was important when working in teams. What was easy or hard about being honest in each role?
EQUIPMENT
1 basketball per 6 students
5 short cones
1 flag per 2 students
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing 3 v 3 Scrimmage. In this game, the objective is to score more baskets than your opponent.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide you into teams of three using flags to tell who you are.
- All games will be played on a half-court.
- Ro Sham Bo to decide which team will start with the ball at the half-court line.
- Every successful shot inside the arc is awarded one point, while every successful shot behind the arc is
- awarded two points.
- If the defense gains possession of the ball within the arc, by a steal, a block or a rebound, the team must
- move the ball behind the arc before taking a shot.
- After a shot is made, the play restarts with a student from the non-scoring team taking the ball directly
- under the basket and then dribbling or passing it to a point behind the arc. The defense is not allowed to
- play, block or charge for the ball inside the arc.
- There is no pushing or shoving. Any fouls may result in loss of play for the student.
- We will begin a new game and rotate teams at the end of 10 minutes.
Game 1: Play as indicated above. Rotate teams after 10 minutes.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: Divide students equally based on athletic ability.
- Approach: Give students the option to be in a competitive or non-competitive group.
- Discussion: Ask students to share what was easy or hard about mirroring while defending the basketball.
