STORYLINE
Today we are Warming Up before our games. Your goal is to follow the Coach and listen to the instructions.
INSTRUCTIONS
- When I say, “GO!” run in the different animal movements from the baseline to the end line.
- Run like a turtle (run slowly and put your arms behind your back)
- Run like a cheetah (run as fast as you can)
- Run like a giraffe (put your arms together above your head to make a long neck)
- Run like an elephant (put your arm out in front of your body to make a trunk)
- Run like a penguin(put your arms out to the sideand waddle)
- Run like a dog
- Swim like a fish (use your arms to swim)
- Duck walk (squat and waddle like a duck)
- Bear crawl
- Hop like a bunny
- Leap like a frog
EQUIPMENT
1 beach ball per 2 children
1 net
STORYLINE
Today we are practicing Setting. You will be Setting a volleyball using overhead open hands to a partner over the net.
INSTRUCTIONS
- "I, the Coach, will demonstrate how to do a set."
- I will divide you into groups of two.
- You must stay on your side of the net.
- I will select one side to start with the beach ball.
- When I say, “GO!” set the beach ball over the net to the opposite side.
- When the ball comes over to your side try and catch it.
- When I say, “GO!” set the beach ball over the net to the opposite side.
- The Coach will decide who will serve/throw.
VARIATIONS
- Play as indicated above
- If you group is advanced enough, have them try to set 1 ball in a zigzag all the way down the lines without dropping it.
TEACHING TIPS
- Demonstrate how to set
- Ask a responsive student to help you
- Adjust the height of the net that is appropriate for the children’s age group.
- Remind children to keep their hands above their head when setting.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Mr. Fox. You are traveling to Grandma’s house (end line) with your balloon (volleyball). Your goal is to juggle your balloon all the way to Grandma’s house without Mr. Fox taking your balloon.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your basket of eggs.
- Mr. Fox will be fast asleep at Grandma’s house.
- When I say, “GO!” you will begin setting your volleyball anywhere on field.
- When I say, “It’s dinner time!” you must juggle your balloon to Grandma’s house (end line) without getting tagged by Mr. Fox.
VARIATIONS
- Let students run with the volleyball when it’s dinner time.
- Setting only.
- Bumping only.
TEACHING TIPS
- Remind children to juggle their balloon back to Grandma’s house after Mr. Fox says, “It’s dinner time!”
- Consider allowing the children to reach the end line without getting tagged for the first few games.
- Speed walking, jogging slowly

STORYLINE
Today we are practicing Catching. You will be throwing to a partner over the net.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Demonstrate how to catch and pass to the children.
- Ask a responsive student to help you
- I will divide you into groups of two.
- You must stay on your side of the net.
- I will select one side to start with the beach ball.
- When I say, “GO!” throw the beach ball over the net to the opposite side.
- When the ball comes over to your side try and catch it.
- When I say, “GO!” throw the beach ball over the net to the opposite side.
- The Coach will decide who will serve/throw.
VARIATIONS
- Pass normally.
- Increase the distance every catch.
- If you group is advanced enough, have them try to throw 1 ball in a zigzag all the way down the lines without dropping it.
TEACHING TIPS
- Demonstrate how to do catch with a teammate.
- Divide groups equally based on athletic ability.
- Adjust the height of the net that is appropriate for the children’s age group.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Coin Catchers. Your goal is to catch a volleyball before it hits the ground.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline.
- When I say, “GO!” I will underhand toss the volleyball to the first person in line.
- After you have caught the volleyball, Roll it back to me
- Run to the end line and grab a coin
- Run back to the end line and put your coin on a cone
- After you have caught the volleyball, Roll it back to me
- We will begin a new game once all the coins have been caught.
VARIATIONS
- Play as indicated above.
- Instead of catching, have them bump or set it back.
TEACHING TIPS
- If children do not catch a volleyball, they can still run to the end line and grab a coin.
- Keep tossing balls up to decrease waiting time

STORYLINE
Today we are practicing Bumping. You will be Bumping a volleyball using underhand open palms to a partner over the net.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Demonstrate how to do a bump.
- Ask an attentive student to help you
- I will divide you into groups of two.
- You must stay on your side of the net.
- I will select one side to start with the beach ball.
- When I say, “GO!” bump the beach ball over the net to the opposite side.
- When the ball comes over to your side try and catch it.
- The Coach will decide who will serve/throw.

- Play as indicated above
- If you group is advanced enough, have them try to bump 1 ball in a zigzag all the way down the lines without dropping it.

Multiple volleyballs/balls per child
STORYLINE
Today we are playing Clean Up Your Yard. Your goal is to keep as much trash (volleyballs) out of your yard by hitting or throwing it over the net and into the other team’s yard.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide everyone into two teams.
- When I say, “GO!” each team will hit or serve all of the trash from their side to the other team’s side.
- Encourage Bumping/Setting/Catching
- You may not throw trash directly at another person.
- You may only throw one ball at a time.
- Encourage Bumping/Setting/Catching
- After a two-minute round, each team will collect and count all of the balls on only their side.
VARIATIONS
- Play as indicated above.
TEACHING TIPS
- If a child does not want to play the game, consider designating him/her as the ball master, where he/she can rescue balls that go out-of-bounds.
- If hitting or serving is too difficult, allow children to throw the volleyballs over the net.
- Adjust the net so that it is appropriate of the children’s age group.
- Remind children to make sure there is no one directly in front of them when they are throwing.
