3-5 Soccer

EQUIPMENT

None

STORYLINE
Today we are Warming Up before our games. Your goal is to follow the Coach and listen to the instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • When  I  say, “GO!”  run  in the different  animal  movements  from  the  baseline  to  the  end  line.  
    • Run  like  a  turtle  (run  slowly  and  put  your  arms  behind  your  back)
    • Run  like  a  cheetah  (run  as  fast  as  you  can)
    • Run  like  a  giraffe  (put  your  arms  together  above  your  head  to  make  a  long  neck)
    • Run  like  an  elephant  (put  your  arm  out  in  front  of  your  body  to  make  a  trunk)
    • Run  like  a  penguin(put  your  arms  out  to  the  sideand  waddle)
    • Run  like  a  dog
    • Swim  like a  fish  (use  your  arms  to  swim)
    • Duck  walk  (squat  and  waddle  like  a  duck)
    • Bear  crawl
    • Hop  like a  bunny
    • Leap  like  a  frog

EQUIPMENT

1 soccer ball per child

20 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Racecars. In this game, you are a racecar driver. Your goal is to stay inside the racetrack (cones) and drive without bumping into any other racecars. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, line up on the baseline with your ball. 
  • When I say, “GO!” start dribbling around the racetrack without bumping into any other racecars.
  • If you drive outside the race rack, make sure to reset back inside the boundaries and keep going. 
  • When I say, “FREEZE!" stop dribbling and balance one foot on the soccer ball.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Children must dribble as fast as they can without going off the track.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Remind children to keep their heads up while dribbling to avoid bumping into others.
  • Approach: Remind children they should be dribbling and not kicking the ball far forward. Children should not be more than two feet away from their soccer ball.
  • Approach: If two circles is confusing for the children, just have one circle and set of short cones the children must dribble around.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw doing a good job dribbling inside the racetrack. What was easy or hard about dribbling without bumping into others?

EQUIPMENT

1 soccer ball per child

1 hula-hoop

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Hoop Catcher. Your goal is to avoid being caught by the Hoop Catcher.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will begin as the Hoop Catcher.
  • When I say, “GO!” start dribbling around the field with your ball.
  • If I catch you with my hula-hoop (put the hula-hoop vertically over you) you are frozen.
  • You can become freed if another teammate gives you a high-five.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: If a child is caught, he/she must wait 20 seconds before getting a high-five from a teammate and becoming unfrozen.
Game 3: Increase the amount time a child is frozen. Have them count aloud to keep them honest.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw doing a good job dribbling with the inside of their feet.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Runway. In this game, you are a pilot flying your airplane (soccer ball). You must drive your airplane down the runway and park it inside the hanger (goal).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, I will split you into two groups.
  • Line up on the baseline with your airplane.
  • When I say, “GO!” the first child in each line will drive their airplane down the runway and kick it into the
  • hanger.
  • If you miss the hanger, try again.
  • After your turn, you must go to the back of the line.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Move goals to different spots.

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Remind children to use both feet when dribbling.
  • Approach: Children should shoot with their laces.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw doing a good job using both their feet and shooting with their laces.

1 soccer pinnie per 2 children

Optional: 5 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Scrimmage C. Your goal is to shoot a soccer ball into the opposing team’s goal.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two teams – offense and defense using soccer pinnies to tell who you are.
  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder with your team on either the baseline or end line.
  • When I say, “GO!” the offense will dribble down the field and try to kick their ball into the opposing team’s
  • goal.
  • The defense will try and block the shots.
  • If you score on goal, run back to the baseline and sit down.
  • We will begin a new game and switch roles after three minutes.
 

Variation 1: No using hands to pick up the ball.
Variation 2: Have the children form a circle and kick it between each other.
Variation 3: Have them dribble to the other side of the field while passing

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Demonstrate how to Pass to the children.
  • Approach: Remind children to gently pass it or else it will go wild.
  • Approach: Supervise to make sure they are doing it correctly.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Cheese Hunt. Your goal is to keep your cheese (soccer ball) away from the sneaky mouse (coach) that hides in his/her mouse house (goal).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your cheese.
  • When I say, “GO!” start to move (dribble) your cheese around the field.
  • Remember, if you do not keep your cheese close, the sneaky mouse will try to steal it and kick it into their house.
  • You can take your cheese back from the mouse’s house
  • When I say, “Freeze!” you must stop.
 

Variation 1: Play as indicated above.
Variation 2: Have more mice
Variation 3: If you lose your cheese you cannot take it from the goal, help another player by passing the ball

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Before starting, ask each child what kind of animal likes to eat cheese.
  • Approach: Tell children that there is a sneaky mouse that lives inside the goal and wants to eat their cheese.
  • Approach: Remind children to keep their cheese close or the mouse will steal it and take it into his/her mouse house.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw using both their feet as they dribble away from the sneaky mouse.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Color Run. Your goal is to dribble your soccer ball down each color lane and kick your ball into the goal.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, decide which lane you want to start in.
  • When I say, “GO!” dribble down your lane.
  • When you get to the end of your lane kick your ball into either goal.
  • If your ball goes out of your lane, bring it back in.
  • When you have scored on goal, retrieve you ball and go down a different lane.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Coach is the goalie. Children have to try and kick a ball into the goal without it getting blocked by the Coach.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: It is up to the Coach’s discretion to start everyone in the same lane or different lanes.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw not stopping before kicking their ball inside the goal.
