STORYLINE
Today we are Warming Up before our games. Your goal is to follow the Coach and listen to instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Run from baseline to end line forwards like a cheetah 
  • Run from baseline to end line side shuffles like a crab
  • Run from baseline to end line backwards like a bear 
  • Back to dots and add high knees, toe touches and jumping jacks or other active movements to warm-up

EQUIPMENT

1 football per child

1 small cone per child

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Power Serve. Your goal is to underhand serve your volleyball over the net to your partner who will try to bump it back.   

  • INSTRUCTIONS
  • I will divide you into two groups. 
  • Before the game begins, one group will line up 5 yards from the net along the net. 
  • When I say, "GO!" everyone will serve their balls to their partners. 
  • The partner will try to bump it back. 
  • We will practice 5 times with each partner before switching. 

TEACHING TIPS
Safety: Remind children to be aware of other balls when serving.

2 pylons

1 football per child 

2 ladders

1 hula-hoop

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Clean Up Your Yard. Your goal is to keep as much trash (beach balls) out of your yard by serving or throwing it over the net and into the other team's yard.

  • INSTRUCTIONS
  • I will divide everyone into two teams.
  • When I say, "GO!" each team will throw or serve all of the trash from their side to the other team's side. 
  • You may not throw trash directly at another person. 
  • You may only throw or serve one ball at a time.
  • After a two-minute round, each team will collect and count all of the balls on only their side.
  • Game 2: try just serving the ball 
  • Game 3: try just bumping the ball 

TEACHING TIPS
Approach: If a child does not want to play the game, consider designating him/her as the ball master, where he/she can rescue balls that go out-of-bounds.
Approach: Adjust the net so that it is appropriate of the children's age group.
Safety: Remind children to make sure there is no one directly in front of them when they are throwing or serving.

EQUIPMENT

2 short cones

1 volleyball per child 

2 ladders

1 hula-hoop

Optional: 1 beach ball per child
 

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Ladder Bumping. Your goal is to bump the tossed volleyball and complete the ladder course. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two groups. 
  • Before the game begins, line up single file behind your group's marker cone.    
  • When I say, "GO!" I will underhand toss a ball to the first person in line.
  • After you have bumped the ball, retrieve it and run through the ladder course. 
  • When you reach the net, serve or throw your volleyball over the net. 
  • Return to the back of the line and put your ball back into the hula-hoop.

TEACHING TIPS
Approach:
Demonstrate beforehand how children should go through the course.   
Approach: Quickly toss the ball within a couple of seconds to keep kids from waiting in line for long periods of time.

EQUIPMENT

1 volleyball
1 net

STORYLINE
Today we are playing a Volleyball Scrimmage. Your goal is to hit and catch a volleyball over the net. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two groups. 
  • You must stay on your group's side of the net. 
  • I will select one group to start with the ball. 
  • When I say, "GO!" hit the ball over the net to the opposite side. 
  • When the ball comes over to your side try and catch it. 
  • The Coach will decide who will serve/hit each time. 

TEACHING TIPS
Approach: To decrease difficulty, give children the option of throwing the ball over the net instead of serving. 
Approach: Adjust the height of the net that is appropriate for the children's age group.
Safety: Remind children they cannot push, shove or jump in front of another teammate when trying to catch the ball.
