5-7 Soccer Lesson

Time: 5 minutes

EQUIPMENT

15 dots

Dots will be set out in a grid pattern 5 dots wide and 4 dots deep.

SET UP
Sit down like you were going to sit in a chair with your hands back then spring up and swing arms forward to get as high as possible.

Squat Jumps
The players will run down the field and back kicking their knees up as high as possible. This drill is not for speed.

High Knees
Run down and back taking 3 steps in a diagonal direction then planting and changing direction the other way in a zig-zag pattern.

Zig Zag Cuts
Run down and back kicking your buttocks with each stride.

Butt Kickers
Step sideways down the court alternating with the following foot stepping in front and behind the leading foot.

EQUIPMENT

1 basketball per 2 students

10 short cones

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Crunch Time. Your goal is to bounce your ball with two hands continuously while the other team races to the midline and back!

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two teams – bouncers and runners.

  • Before the game begins, runners must line up shoulder-to-shoulder in front of the baseline.

  • Bouncers must line up shoulder-to-shoulder with their ball behind the baseline.

  • When I say, "GO!" bouncers must start bouncing their ball with two hands while the runners race to the

  • midline, touch a cone and run back to the baseline.

  • If your ball stops bouncing, quickly pick it up and keep going.

  • Once all the runners are back on the baseline, teams will switch roles and we will begin a new round.

 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Bouncers have to make a certain number of bounces then sit down.
Game 3: To increase difficulty, have runners run backwards, skip, run in pairs, etc.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Increase the size of the court based on class size.
    Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw doing a good job at pointing their hands down and out after each bounce.

EQUIPMENT

1 basketball per student

10 short cones

4 hula-hoops

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Catch the Clementines. In this game, you are monkeys trying to store as many clementines (basketballs) in your tree house by passing to the catchers.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select four catchers, in charge of catching the clementines to store in the tree houses (hula-hoops).

  • The rest of you will be monkeys (runners).

  • When I say, “GO!” the monkeys must:

    • Run to the forest.

    • Grab a clementine

    • Run back and pass the clementine to any catcher

  • Monkeys must pass the clementines outside of the boundary cones.

  • We will begin a new game when all the clementines are stored and new catchers are selected.

 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Monkeys can pass clementines to any catchers.
Game 2: Divide students into teams. Monkeys pass clementines to their team catchers.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw trying their best by taking a step towards the catcher when passing clementines.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Pirate Possession. In this game, you are ships in the ocean. Your goal is to avoid being taken over by a pirate.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select three people to be pirates – using flags to tell who the are.

  • Everyone else will have a soccer ball.

  • Before the game begins, spread out in the field while staying inside the boundary cones.

  • When I say, “GO!” dribble around the field with your ball.

  • If your ball gets stolen by a pirate and he/she scores a goal, then you become a pirate.

  • We will begin a new round when there are no more balls left.

 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: This game is intended to be played on a half-court. If your class size is smaller, play with one whole group.
    Approach: Give students the option to be in a competitive or non-competitive group.
    Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw being a team player during this game.

EQUIPMENT

1 basketball per 6 students

1 flag per 2 students

OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing 3 v 3 Scrimmage. In this game, the objective is to score more baskets than your opponent.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into teams of three using flags to tell who you are.

  • All games will be played on a half-court.

  • Ro Sham Bo to decide which team will start with the ball at the half-court line.

  • Every successful shot inside the arc is awarded one point, while every successful shot behind the arc is

  • awarded two points.

  • If the defense gains possession of the ball within the arc, by a steal, a block or a rebound, the team must

  • move the ball behind the arc before taking a shot.

  • After a shot is made, the play restarts with a student from the non-scoring team taking the ball directly

  • under the basket and then dribbling or passing it to a point behind the arc. The defense is not allowed to

  • play, block or charge for the ball inside the arc.

  • There is no pushing or shoving. Any fouls may result in loss of play for the student.

  • We will begin a new game and rotate teams at the end of 10 minutes.

 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Rotate teams after 10 minutes.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Divide students equally based on athletic ability.
    Approach: Give students the option to be in a competitive or non-competitive group.
    Discussion: Ask students to share what skills they used on offense and defense in this game.
