5-7 Soccer Lessons

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to dribble around objects while jogging.

IMPORTANCE
Dribbling around objects while jogging is important because it improves your ability to dribble in tight areas and past defenders.

When dribbling around objects while jogging, it is important to:

1. Use different parts of your foot (inside, outside, top and body.

objects.

2. Keep the ball close to your body

TECHNIQUE
Today we are going to learn how to attack the ball.

IMPORTANCE
Attacking the ball is important because it 1) prevents the other team from scoring, 2) stops the other team from getting close to your goal and 3) allows you to gain possession of the ball.

When attacking the ball, it is important to:

1. Apply pressure to the player with the ball to slow them down.

2. Approach your opponent with the ball with a curved run to channel him/her in a certain direction.

3. Steal or kick the ball away.

EQUIPMENT

None

STORYLINE
Today we are Warming Up before our games. Your goal is to follow the Coach and listen to instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • When I say, “GO!”:
    • Stretch - up into sky then touch your toes
    • Do 10 arm circles forward and backward
    • Sit on your bottom and stretch to toes
    • Calf stretch
    • Flamingo stretch
  • Run without the soccer ball from baseline to end line
  • Dribble with your soccer ball from baseline to end line.

EQUIPMENT

1 soccer ball per child

14 short cones 1 goal

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Traffic Jam. Your goal is to dribble your soccer ball from one end to the other without bumping into another car (person).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two teams.
  • Each team will line up shoulder-to-shoulder on either the baseline or sideline.
  • Before the game begins, line up behind a marker cone with your ball.
  • When I say, “GO!” everyone will dribble from one end to the other.
  • If your ball or body touches another car you must restart.
  • When you reach the marker cone on the other side, sit down so I know that you have finished.
  • We will begin a new round and rotate sides after everyone has finished.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Game 2: Add cones in the middle of the field students must dribble around when going from one end to the other.
Game 3: Add a defender (Coach) in the middle students must avoid.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Safety: Remind students to keep their head up while dribbling to avoid collisions.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw trying their best at avoiding other cars while dribbling.

EQUIPMENT

1 soccer ball per 2 children

11 short cones (3 red, 5 yellow, 3 blue)

1 goal

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Box Out. Your goal is to dribble into the box and make it past a defender.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will select one person to be on defense. Everyone else will be offense.
  • Before the game begins, line up single file behind a marker cone.
  • When I say, “GO!” the first people in line will start dribbling to the goal.
  • You must dribble inside one of the three boxes.
  • If you get past the defender, shoot on goal.
  • The defender cannot leave the boxes.
  • If your ball gets stolen or kicked out-of-bounds, you must retrieve your ball and head to the back of the
  • line.
  • The next person in line can go when the Coach gives permission.
  • We will begin a new game once all the offenders have gone and a new defender is chosen.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Only one defender for three boxes.
Game 2: Add another defender so that there are two defenders for three boxes.
Game 3: Add another defender so that there are three defenders for three boxes.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: If only one defender is too difficult, have the Coach be the single defender.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw doing a good job at attacking the ball while on defense.

EQUIPMENT

1 soccer ball 2 goals

1 pinnie per 2 children

STORYLINE
Today we are playing a Coach Lead Scrimmage. Your goal is to shoot a soccer ball into the opposing team’s goal.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two teams –using pinnies to tell who you are.
  • Before the game begins, spread out on your side of the field.
  • I will decide which team starts with the ball first.
  • When I say, “GO!” the team with the ball will start.
  • You cannot touch the ball with your hands, you can only kick the ball.
  • There are no goalies, you must stand 3 – 5 feet away from your goal when defending.
  • If a goal is scored, go back to your team’s side and we will begin a new round.
  • If I blow my whistle at any point, freeze where you are.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above. Coach can blow his/her whistle at any point to give instruction during the game.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.
  • Approach: Remind children the whistle will be blown at various times during the game for teaching moments.
  • Approach: Add short cones around the goal if defenders are staying 3 – 5 feet away.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share what was easy or hard about attacking the ball.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Racecars. In this game, you are a racecar driver. Your goal is to race around the track and shoot your ball into the goal.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into two teams.
  • Before the game begins, line up single file behind your team’s marker cone.
  • When I say, “GO!” the first person in line will start dribbling around the racetrack and shoot their ball into
  • the goal.
  • The next person in line can go when the person in front of them has shot on goal.
  • After you have shot on goal, retrieve your ball and head back to the end of any line.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.

  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw doing a good job at dribbling around the cones.

1 pinnie per 2 children

STORYLINE
Today we are playing 3 v 2. Your goal is to work with your teammates to score a goal.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • I will divide you into teams of three (offense) or two (defense) using pinnies to tell who you are.
  • Each team will play on one half of the field.
  • When I say, “GO!” the team with the ball will start.
  • You cannot touch the ball with your hands, you can only kick the ball.
  • There are no goalies, you must stand 3 – 5 feet away from your goal when defending.
  • If a goal is scored, go back to the midline and we will begin another round.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Remind children we will only be playing on half of the field.
  • Approach: Rotate children on offense and defense every couple of minutes.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw trying their best at getting back to the goal when on defense.
