EQUIPMENT
1 Big Plastic Bat
4 White bases
4 Foam Dodgeballs
1 Pitcher mound stripe
OBJECTIVE
Today we are playing a GrowFit Derby. In this game, the objective is to work together with your team to get the most runs.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will split you into two teams and one team will be up to bat and the other team will be in the field.
- When your team is up to bat everyone on your team gets at least one chance to bat.
- You must hit the ball past the pitcher and it must into the field by going between first base and third base to be a “playable ball.”
- If the ball doesn’t pass the pitcher it counts as a redo.
- If you swing and miss it counts as a strike. You get 3 strikes before you must go back to the end of your line.
- A foul ball is a ball hit to the right of first base or to the left of third base. A foul ball counts as a strike.
- You cannot “strike out” on a foul ball.
- When you hit the ball you must run to first base. When you are on a base you are safe.
- There may not be more than one runner on a base at a time.
- When you touch “home base” after running to the other bases your team gets a point.
- If you are running to a base and someone on the other team catches the ball you hit, hits you will the ball or tags you with the ball you are “out” and must get in the back of your line.
Game 1: Run a 5 minute test game with students who know the rules so the other players can watch
Game 2: For decreased difficulty consider removing strikes and let everyone hit the ball
Game 3: After 3 “outs” the teams switch sides
Game 4: Add a “home run line” with cones. Home runs score everyone on base without the possibility of defense
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: Divide teams equally based on athletic ability.
- Approach: If space allows, have non-competitive option for students to play.
