EQUIPMENT
1 dot for each player
1 playground ball
12 short cones
OBJECTIVE
This activity is called Bounce Ball. The objective of the game is to be the last runner remaining on a dot.
INSTRUCTIONS
- One of you is designated as the “bouncer” and the rest of you will start as “runners”
- As the bouncer, your job is to bounce pass the ball at runners as they move between dots
- You must throw the ball from outside of the field boundaries at all times
- The ball must bounce once first before hitting a runner below the waist
- A bouncer may go into the field only to retrieve the ball
- As a runner, your job is to move successfully from one dot to the next without getting hit
- Dots are “safe zones” and you must have one foot touching the dot until your next move
- No more than two runners may be on a dot at one time
- Runners must move to a new dot every time after the ball is thrown
- When you are hit on the bounce, you must leave the field space and remove one dot
- If you go out of bounds, you leave the circle with a dot and cheer on the remaining runners
- If you are the last runner remaining, you become the new bouncer for the next round
Game 1: Consider having hit runners remove a dot and then become “blockers” for protecting the remaining runners from the ball. *They may only block with their hands
Game 2: Instead of a circle, consider using a rectangle as the activity space.
Game 3: Consider having hit runners become additional bouncers and take turns with the ball.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: Depending on class size, use more than one hoop and divide students into multiple groups.
- Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw doing a good job at making an "L" with their shooting arm when shooting.
- Safety: Demonstrate a proper bounce throw to show players what a successful hit should look like.
