EQUIPMENT
1 basketball for each player
OBJECTIVE
This activity is called Dribble and Move. The objective is to get as close to the teacher possible while completing the dribbling skill and then getting back to the safe zone without getting tagged.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Each of you gets a basketball and lines up along your “safe zone” at one end of the field
- The teacher is on the other side of the field
- Make sure to hold the ball so that you can hear the teacher’s instructions
- Each round, the teacher will call out a number of times to dribble and move
- For example, when the teacher says "dribble and move two times" and holds up two fingers, your job is to dribble your ball twice (counting out loud), then hold the ball and take two steps (not jumps) forward towards the teacher
- Each round you will get closer and closer to the teacher
- If you do not follow the “dribble and move” instructions correctly, the teacher will send you back to the safe zone to start over
- When the teacher says "time to go!" you need to grab your basketball and try to run back to the safe zone without being tagged
- Each game will get more challenging, so be ready!
Game 1: Have the players warm up by dribbling
Game 2: Consider allowing a kid to be the tagger. You may still want to be the one giving the instructions.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: Depending on class size, use more than one hoop and divide students into multiple groups.
- Discussion: Ask students to share who they saw doing a good job at making an "L" with their shooting arm when shooting.
- Safety: Demonstrate a proper bounce throw to show players what a successful hit should look like.
