STORYLINE
Today we are playing Clean Up Your Yard. Your goal is to keep as many balls out of your yard by throwing them into the other team’s yard.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide everyone into two teams.
- When I say, “GO!” each team will throw all of the balls from their side to the other team’s side.
- You may not throw a ball at another student on the other team.
- You may only throw one ball at a time.
- After a two-minute game, each team will collect and count all of the balls on only their side.
Game 1: Both teams throw balls into each other’s side for two minutes.
Game 2: Consider making the time limit shorter or longer.
Variation: If students hold onto more than one ball at a time, “freeze” them for 20 seconds.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: If a student does not want to play the game, consider designating him/her as the ball master, where he/she can rescue the balls that go out-of-bounds.
- Safety: Remind students to make sure there is no one directly in front of them when they are throwing.
- Discussion: Ask students to share why being honest is important when they count the balls on their side.
