EQUIPMENT

None

STORYLINE
Today we are Warming Up before our games. Your goal is to follow the Coach and listen to the instructions.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • When  I  say, “GO!”  run  in the different  animal  movements  from  the  baseline  to  the  end  line.  
    • Run  like  a  turtle  (run  slowly  and  put  your  arms  behind  your  back)
    • Run  like  a  cheetah  (run  as  fast  as  you  can)
    • Run  like  a  giraffe  (put  your  arms  together  above  your  head  to  make  a  long  neck)
    • Run  like  an  elephant  (put  your  arm  out  in  front  of  your  body  to  make  a  trunk)
    • Run  like  a  penguin(put  your  arms  out  to  the  sideand  waddle)
    • Run  like  a  dog
    • Swim  like a  fish  (use  your  arms  to  swim)
    • Duck  walk  (squat  and  waddle  like  a  duck)
    • Bear  crawl
    • Hop  like a  bunny
    • Leap  like  a  frog

EQUIPMENT

10 short cones

1 soccer ball per child

STORYLINE
Today we are practicing Kicking. Your goal is to kick the soccer ball as far as you can. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the practice begins, you must line up on the baseline.
  • When I say, “Go” kick the ball as far as you can without moving from the line.
  • After every child has kicked the ball, have them retrieve it and bring it back to the line.
  • Try other variations once they have practiced a little.
 

Variation 1: Kick normally
Variation 2: Return the ball without using hands

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Demonstrate the process of kicking and returning.
  • Remind children to only kick the ball once before retrieving it.
  • Supervise to make sure they are doing it correctly.

EQUIPMENT

1 tall cone per child

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Knock ‘Em Down. Your goal is to knock all the cones over using your feet.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, line up on the baseline.
  • When I say, “GO!” start running around the field, kicking cones down.
  • When I say, “Freeze!" you must stop.
  • When all the cones have been kicked over, set them back up using your feet.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Remind children to use their biggest kicks.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share how they saw kicking over cones using only their feet.

STORYLINE
Today we are practicing Dribbling. Your goal is to control the ball with your feet. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the practice begins, you must line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your ball.
  • When I say, “Start” begin dribbling the ball with both feet.
  • When I say, “Stop!” freeze by putting one foot on the ball.
  • Try other variations once they have practiced a little.
 

Variation 1: Dribble with both feet.
Variation 2: Right foot only.
Variation 3: Left foot only

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Demonstrate how to Dribble to the children.
  • Have children put their arms out to the sides (like an airplane) to help them balance better.
  • Remind children they should be dribbling and not kicking the ball far forward

EQUIPMENT

1 soccer ball per child

12 fuzzy balls (4 red, 4 blue, 4 yellow)

3 hula-hoops (1 red, 1 blue, 1 yellow)

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Cookie Jar. Your goal is to help Cookie Monster (coach) put all the cookies (dots) back into the correct color cookie jar (hula-hoop).

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your ball.
  • When I say, “GO!” begin dribbling your ball around the field.
  • Once you pick up a cookie, dribble your ball to the correct color cookie jar to drop it in.
  • You can only pick up one cookie at a time.
  • We will begin a new game when all the cookies have been put back in the correct color cookie jar.
 

Game 1: Play as indicated above.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Remind children to keep their heads up to avoid bumping into others while dribbling.
  • Approach: Remind children to keep their ball close to their body.
  • Approach: Remind children to only pick up one cookie at time.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw doing a good job at keeping the ball close and while dribbling and putting the cookies into the cookie jars.

EQUIPMENT

STORYLINE
Today we are practicing Foot Taps. Your goal is to tap the top of your soccer ball with the bottom of your foot. 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, you must line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your ball.
  • When I say, “Start” begin tapping the top of the ball with one foot.
  • When I say, “Stop!” freeze by putting one foot on the ball.
  • Try other variations once they have practiced a little.
 

Variation 1: Play as indicated above.
Variation 2: Children dribble around the field on "start". Foot tap stop ball on "stop".

  • Have children put their arms out to the sides (like an airplane) to help them balance better.
  • Remind children they should be dribbling and not kicking the ball far forward.

STORYLINE
Today we are playing Traffic Light. Your goal is to dribble your soccer ball to the other side of the field to reach the traffic light (coach). 

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Before the game begins, you must line up shoulder-to-shoulder on the baseline with your ball.
  • When I say, “Green light!” begin dribbling forward.
  • When I say, “Red light!” freeze and balance one foot on the ball.
 

Game 1: Children walk and dribble on green light.
Game 2: Children run and dribble on green light.
Game 3: Incorporate a "purple light" for dance parties.

 

TEACHING TIPS

  • Approach: Remind children that this is not a race.  It is important to go at a pace that is personally challenging, but allows you the ability to stop quickly.
  • Approach: Remind children they should be dribbling and not kicking the ball far forward. Children should not be more than two feet away from their ball.
  • Safety: Have children put their arms out to the sides (like an airplane) to help them balance better.
  • Discussion: Ask children to share who they saw doing a good job at playing this game without touching the ball with their hands.
