๐Ÿ““ The Inventor's Notebook โ€” Spine of the Week

Every camper gets a printed Inventor's Notebook Day 1. They decorate the cover Monday, sketch + reflect every day, and take it home Friday with a counselor-signed "Certified Inventor" certificate on the back cover.

  • Format: 12 pages, printed double-sided on 6 sheets, top-stapled. ~$0.30/notebook = ~$6/camp week.
  • Page-per-day cadence: every day has 2โ€“4 dedicated notebook pages (IMAGINE, TEST, IMPROVE, REFLECTION).
  • Plus: Cover, Engineer's Pledge (page 1), Friday team page + favorite invention page + "3 inventors I admire" + "1 thing I want to invent next" + counselor-signed certificate.
  • Why the notebook matters: the daily contraptions (boat, car, catapult, drop-saver) go home each day โ€” they're fun but fragile. The notebook is the parent-facing artifact for the WHOLE WEEK. Centerpiece of the Friday family showcase.

What progresses across the week

Daily photo moment (consistency for parent socials)

Same photo wall every day (one corner of the room with a "GrowFit Inventors Lab" sign + plain colored backdrop). Take both:

  1. Individual โ€” camper holding today's contraption at chest level.
  2. Group โ€” themed daily salute:
    • Mon โ€” Engineer Salute: kids hold their balloon-saver overhead, finger guns at the camera with the other hand, mouths open in mock-shock
    • Tue โ€” Captains Salute: kids hold their boat at chest level with both hands like presenting cargo to a port master
    • Wed โ€” Launch Squad: every kid frozen mid-fire pose, catapult arm pulled back, marshmallow loaded

Counselors upload both to the daily folder by 12:15 PM for Russ to push to socials and parent email. Critical: photograph the individual builds BEFORE the 11:45 pack-out โ€” the build only exists today.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Hard safety rules across the week

Materials + body

  • Bins are not food. Marbles, pom-poms, marshmallows, bottle caps, pennies โ€” none go in mouths. Repeat at start of every day, especially after snack.
  • Scissors stay with counselors. Counselor pre-cuts everything Sunday (bubble wrap squares, paper sheets, cardboard tubes, skewer lengths). If a kid needs a cut, counselor does it.
  • Tape doesn't go on people. Designs, yes. Skin / hair / clothes, no.
  • Rubber bands SNAP. Wednesday especially. Counselor swaps any frayed band before round 2 tests.
  • Bottle caps + small marbles = CHOKING HAZARDS for younger campers. Counselor counts marbles in + out Friday.

Drop / float / launch / roll zones

  • Test zones are off-limits during build. Only one kid at a time in the drop zone, float tub, launch line, or race course.
  • Anyone firing AT another kid sits out 5 minutes. Catapults aim at targets / run zones. No exceptions.
  • Spills happen. Wet floors = slip hazards. Counselor wipes immediately after each test.

Heat / outdoor setup

  • Drop Day + Boat Day work better outside on grass with a tarp. Counselor checks weather Sunday + decides location.
  • Hydration: water break every 30โ€“45 min, more in heat.
  • Sunscreen + hats for outdoor sessions.

Friday family showcase

  • Parents are GUESTS โ€” kids don't run/shove/shout when families arrive.
  • Confirm pickup adult for each kid at the gate.
  • Marbles + bell stay at camp โ€” kids take only their team's chain piece they personally built.

Counselor pre-camp checklist (Sunday night before Week 1)

  • Inventor's Notebooks printed, stapled, and stacked โ€” 20 notebooks (16 campers + 4 spares). Print Sunday, top-staple, stash in a labeled bin

What we deliberately DO NOT do this week

  • We don't recreate eggs. Water balloons are cleaner, more dramatic, and just as instructive.
  • We don't give kids a "finished kit." The whole point is they invent. If we hand them a pre-cut Lego-style kit, we've removed the camp's reason for being.
  • We don't sort kids by skill. Every challenge has room for low + high creativity. The 6-year-old's catapult that flies 1 ft and the 9-year-old's that flies 12 ft are BOTH inventions.
  • We don't grade or rank. Friday awards (Distance King, Top Cargo, etc.) are CELEBRATIONS, not competitions. Every kid gets a Certified Inventor certificate.
  • We don't run perfect tests. A boat that sinks on penny 5 is great data. A catapult that fires sideways is great data. The "wrong" outcome IS the lesson.

  • Engineering: the Engineering Design Process โ€” ASK, IMAGINE, BUILD, TEST, IMPROVE. The big idea: inventors don't get it right the first time. They iterate.
  • Vocabulary in kid words: prototype (your first try โ€” never the final one), iterate (try it, fix it, try again), cushion (something soft that takes the hit instead of the balloon), parachute (a wide thing that catches air and slows the fall)
  • SEL: comfort with failure (it's the WHOLE POINT of inventing), patience with a partner during build, courage to drop in front of the group

  • Counselors greet at the door with high-fives; campers find their assigned seat (pairs set Sunday โ€” same pair all week).
  • At each spot: stapled Inventor's Notebook with the camper's name on the cover. NO water balloons at desks yet.
  • Counselor hype:

    "Welcome to the GrowFit INVENTORS LAB! This is the week you become a REAL INVENTOR. Today is DROP DAY. Your mission: design something that lets a water balloon SURVIVE A 4-FOOT FALL without popping. Some designs will WORK. Some willโ€ฆ POP. That's the WHOLE POINT. Real inventors POP balloons before they get it right. Are you ready?"

  • Wonder Question read-aloud. Take 4โ€“5 kid answers. ("ALL good ideas. Today you get to TRY them.")
  • Show counselor's pre-built demo. "By 11:30, every one of you will have built your own. Some will work. Some won't. We're going to film them in SLOW MOTION so you can see EXACTLY what happens."
  • Notebook intro (3 min): "This is YOUR Inventor's Notebook. Flip to the COVER. Draw YOURSELF as an inventor. Safety goggles, big smile, holding something you invented. You have 3 minutes."
  • Engineer's Pledge (2 min): counselor reads page 1 aloud; every camper signs.
  • Safety contract (60 sec): water balloons stay in the bucket until counselor says. Tape goes on the design, not on people. Materials are not food.

9:15 โ€“ 9:30 | Warm-up: Water Balloon Toss + 5-Word Crash Course (15 min)

  • 8 min โ€” Water Balloon Toss (NO BUILD yet): outside on grass or on the tarp.
    • Pairs 4 feet apart, 1 balloon. Each catch = both kids step back 1. Furthest pair wins a goofy cheer.
    • Counselor seal: "WHY did your balloon pop? The GROUND is hard. Your job today is to make SOMETHING soft so the GROUND doesn't pop the balloon."
  • 7 min โ€” the 5 inventor words. Counselor writes BIG on the whiteboard. Kids chorus each:
    • ASK โ€” what's the problem? (Today: balloon vs. ground)
    • IMAGINE โ€” sketch 3 ideas
    • BUILD โ€” pick ONE and make it
    • TEST โ€” does it work? (Most of the time: NO.)
    • IMPROVE โ€” make it better

9:30 โ€“ 9:45 | ASK + IMAGINE โ€” Materials Reveal + Sketch 3 Ideas (15 min)

  • Materials reveal (5 min): counselor walks invention bin to the front, names each material BIG: "COTTON BALLS! STRAWS! CUPS! BUBBLE WRAP! PLASTIC BAGS! PAPER! CARDBOARD TUBES! TAPE!"
  • Pass the bin so every kid touches every material.
  • Sketch 3 ideas (10 min): "Open notebook to PAGE 2 โ€” the IMAGINE page. 3 boxes. Sketch 3 different balloon-savers. They don't have to be neat. They don't have to be possible."
  • Counselor circulates with cues: "What about a cushion AND a parachute?" "Can you draw one with straws sticking out like crash legs?"
  • Younger (6โ€“7): "If 3 is too many, just sketch ONE."
  • Older (8โ€“9): "Circle the one you think will work best. Why?"

9:45 โ€“ 10:15 | BUILD round 1 โ€” First Prototype (30 min)

  • Counselor cue: "Pick ONE of your sketches. Grab the materials you need. BUILD."
  • Pair-up + bin rotation in waves of 4 (3 min).
  • Build (27 min) โ€” kids work solo at their spot (partners help each other but each builds their own).
  • Counselors circulate with FOUR jobs:
    1. No-water-yet rule โ€” water balloons don't come out until 10:30. Kids build around imaginary balloon shape (counselor has 4 dry "demo balloons" to size against).
    2. Stuck-kid SOS โ€” kneel at eye level: "What's your idea? Tell me. Which material first?"
    3. Tape discipline โ€” pre-tear 6" strips at each table.
    4. Halftime call at 10:00: "Step back. Is your design READY to drop? What's missing?"
  • At 10:15: "Leave designs at your spot. Snack."

10:15 โ€“ 10:30 | Snack + Brain-Break: Pass-the-Compliment + Engineering Charades (15 min)

  • Hands washed. Snack at the snack table.
  • Pass-the-Compliment (8 min): "I want to compliment Jamie โ€” your design has the COOLEST parachute I've seen."
  • Engineering Charades (4 min): counselor calls "BUILDER!" / "DESIGNER!" / "TESTER!" / "IMPROVER!" โ€” kids act each out.

10:30 โ€“ 11:00 | TEST round 1 โ€” The First Drop! (30 min)

THIS IS THE MOMENT. Loud, dramatic, video-recorded.

  • Setup (5 min): drop zone outside or on the tarp. Counselor with iPhone in slow-mo, low to the ground, framed on the bullseye. Bucket of balloons next to drop point.
  • The drop ritual (~1 min per kid ร— 16 = ~25 min):
    1. Kid walks to the drop point with their design.
    2. Counselor hands them ONE balloon. Kid loads it.
    3. Counselor: "ENGINEERS! READY?" โ†’ group: "READY!" โ†’ "3 โ€” 2 โ€” 1 โ€” DROP!"
    4. Kid drops. Counselor films. Group reacts.
    5. POP โ†’ group does the agreed "OOOOHHHH NOOOO!" arms in the air. (NOT a loss โ€” this is INFORMATION.)
    6. SURVIVE โ†’ group does the agreed "OHHHHHH YEAHHHHH!" + high-fives.
    7. Counselor: "What happened? Where did the balloon hit? Great โ€” now you know what to IMPROVE."
  • Counselor cue throughout: "POPPING IS GOOD INFORMATION. Real inventors break stuff to learn what to fix."
  • The upset kid: squat down. "That's amazing! Now you KNOW what didn't work. Real inventors POP things ALL DAY. Now let's design version 2."

11:00 โ€“ 11:25 | IMPROVE + TEST round 2 โ€” Iterate, Retest, Capture (25 min)

  • Notebook beat (5 min): "Page 3 โ€” TEST page. Circle POP or SURVIVE. Write 1 sentence WHY. Page 4 โ€” IMPROVE โ€” sketch v2 with ONE change."
  • Improve round (10 min): kids return to bin, grab what they need for v2.
  • TEST round 2 (10 min): same drop ritual, FASTER. Counselor films again.
  • Counselor seal: "Round 1 โ€” most popped. Round 2 โ€” way more survived. THAT is what an INVENTOR does."

11:25 โ€“ 11:45 | Slow-Mo Replay Show + Gallery Walk + Photo Moment (20 min)

  • Slow-mo replay (8 min): counselor passes the iPhone around the circle (or AirPlays to TV/projector). Kids watch their drops. Big "WHOA"s. Lessons spotted in real time.
  • Notebook beat (5 min): "Page 5 โ€” REFLECTION. Draw your favorite drop. Fill in 'I learned that ___.' Counselor seals each page with a star."
  • Gallery walk (5 min): kids stand behind their final design. Counselor names 1 cool thing about every kid.
  • Photo wall (2 min):
    • Individual: each kid holding balloon-saver at chest level.
    • Group: "ENGINEER SALUTE!" โ€” overhead-hold + finger guns + mock-shock. 3 shots.
  • Critical: photograph EVERY design before takedown.

11:45 โ€“ 12:00 | Brown Bag Pack-Out + Notebook Storage + Goodbye Cheer (15 min)

  • "Bag It" cleanup: SURVIVING balloon-savers go in the kid's named brown bag. POPPED designs โ€” kid's choice to bag or toss. Unused materials back in the bin.
  • 2 counselors fold the wet tarp.
  • Notebook stays at camp. Stored in named bin.
  • Goodbye cheer: "GrowFit Inventors โ€” DIS-MISSED! Tell your parents you POPPED water balloons FOR SCIENCE today. Tomorrow we BUILD BOATS!"
  • Photo upload by 12:15 PM โ€” both stills + best 2โ€“3 slow-mo clips.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Counselor tips

  • The night before: fill 25 water balloons. Tie tight. Stash in a cooler.
  • Pre-build YOUR balloon-saver the night before. Pop a balloon at home to feel the failure first.
  • Set up outside if possible. Drops on grass = perfect.
  • iPhone slow-mo is the single best engagement tool of the day. Open Camera โ†’ swipe to SLO-MO. Frame on the bullseye. Press record BEFORE the kid drops.
  • The biggest Monday risk: a kid whose design ALWAYS pops feels like the camp's failing them. Sit at eye level: "Real inventors POP every day. Edison broke 1000 light bulbs before one worked." Help iterate to v2 with ONE specific change.
  • Tape rationing. Pre-tear 6" strips at each table.
  • The kid whose design SURVIVES round 1. Don't let them switch to a new design โ€” make them IMPROVE round 1 (e.g., "Now drop it from 5 feet!").
  • Hot weather check: >85ยฐF = balloons feel GREAT. <60ยฐF data-preserve-html-node="true" = keep drops short + hand towels nearby.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Safety call-out

  • Water balloons are NOT for throwing at people. IN the design or in the drop zone only.
  • Drop zone is OFF-LIMITS when someone is dropping. Group watches from 6 feet back.
  • Wet floors = slip hazards. Counselor wipes immediately.
  • Tape is sticky. Don't tape hair, clothes, skin.
  • Materials NOT food. Repeat after snack.

Your camper became an INVENTOR today! Today was DROP DAY โ€” designing a contraption that could survive a 4-foot water balloon drop. Your kid learned the 5 magic words of every real inventor: ASK, IMAGINE, BUILD, TEST, IMPROVE. Some designs popped. Some survived. That's the WHOLE POINT. Today's engineering word: PROTOTYPE โ€” your first version is never your last. Ask tonight:

  • "Did your water balloon POP or SURVIVE?"
  • "If you could redesign it tomorrow, what would you change?"
  • "What's the COOLEST thing you saw another kid build?" The contraption in the brown bag (if it came home) is your kid's prototype. They might want to test it at home with water in the sink โ€” let them. Tomorrow: FLOAT DAY โ€” your kid builds a BOAT that has to hold pennies without sinking. Wear clothes that can get a little splashy.

Some boats will hold 5 pennies. Some will hold 100. Real engineers design the biggest cargo ships in the world this exact same way."
  • Wonder Question read-aloud. Counselor lands the lesson on the whiteboard: "Boats float because they PUSH water out of the way โ€” DISPLACEMENT. The water pushes BACK up. Big and wide = more displacement = more cargo."
  • Demo: counselor adds pennies one at a time to ~80% of demo boat's capacity. "Mine held [X] pennies last night."
  • Notebook beat (2 min): "Page 6 โ€” see the cargo box? You'll fill in your number at the end. Page 7 โ€” IMAGINE โ€” sketch 3 boats after we warm up."
  • Safety contract: water tub OFF-LIMITS until test block. Spills happen โ€” towels are there.

9:15 โ€“ 9:30 | Warm-up: Paper Boat Race + 5-Word Refresher (15 min)

  • 8 min โ€” Paper Boat Race: 2โ€“4 kids at a time, boats at start line. "BLOW!" โ†’ mouth-blow (or fan) to finish. 4โ€“5 heats.
  • Counselor seal: "Did anyone's boat get HEAVY when wet? Did it sink? โ€” PAPER absorbs water. Today we're using BETTER materials so the boat STAYS dry."
