Marshmallow Tower Challenge
Innovation Hour
Materials Needed (per 10 campers):
Marshmallows (regular-sized and/or mini marshmallows)
Toothpicks
Measuring tape or ruler
Timer
Paper and pencils (optional for sketching initial ideas)
Objective: Campers will collaboratively build tall and creative structures using marshmallows and toothpicks, developing teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and engineering skills.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
Introduce the challenge by explaining the goal: building the tallest or most creative freestanding structure possible using only provided materials.
Briefly discuss basic structural principles such as balance, stability, and support.
2. Demonstration & Planning (5 minutes)
Demonstrate how to safely connect toothpicks and marshmallows.
Allow teams a few minutes to discuss and sketch their design ideas.
3. Building Challenge (25 minutes)
Distribute materials equally and start the timer.
Teams collaborate to build their marshmallow towers.
Counselors circulate to encourage teamwork, offer advice, and facilitate creative problem-solving.
4. Measuring and Sharing (10 minutes)
After time expires, each team measures and records their structure's height.
Teams present their structures, explaining their design approach and reflecting on challenges and successes.
5. Clean Up (5 minutes)
Collect unused materials.
Dispose of used marshmallows and broken toothpicks.
Ensure workspace is tidy.
Assessment:
Observe camper teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
Facilitate a discussion reflecting on what strategies worked best and lessons learned from the activity.
