STORYLINE
Today we are going to play Mystery Maze. No talking, this is a silent game. Your goal is to find the "special" sequence too unlock the mystery maze.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will spread out dots all throughout the field.
- Among the dots laid out, seven are “special” dots, which make up a “mystery maze” path.
- Only the teacher knows which dots they are and what the order is.
- The nearest dot will be the “starting dot.”
- Every player must start from dot 1 and walk to all of the known dots in the sequence before trying to find the next unknown dot in the sequence.
- When I say "GO!" players must work together by taking turns to find the next dot in the mystery maze by having the first player in line walk to a dot that they think is the next dot in the sequence.
- If the player walks to the correct dot, the teacher will say, “yes, correct dot” and then the player will try for the next dot.
- If the player goes to the wrong dot, the teacher will say, “no, incorrect dot.”
- This player will then go to the end of the line and the next player will repeat the process, having observed and learned from their teammate’s successes and mistakes.
- We will begin a new round when the group figures out the correct sequence to unlock the maze.
- Every player must start from dot 1 and walk to all of the known dots in the sequence before trying to find the next unknown dot in the sequence.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Variation: Consider making each “leg” of the maze a different mode of traveling for the next game. For example, “walk to the first dot, hop to the second dot and one-foot hop to the third dot”
Variation: In the spirit of non-verbal communication, consider giving a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” when a player reaches a new dot
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: The focus is to have students move around a corner, so make sure students leave the harbor as soon as the orders are given.
- Discussion: Ask students to share how they rounded the corner to avoid losing too much speed as they ran from the sea monsters.
