STORYLINE
Today we are playing Save the Turtles. Players are divided into two teams, the “marine biologists” (runners) and the “pirates” (throwers.) On one end of the field is the “biology lab” (safe zone) and at the other is “Turtle Island.” The goal of the marine biologists is to try to save all of the “turtle eggs” (field hockey balls) by safely transporting them from Turtle Island to the lab. The pirates are stationed along the sides of the course and they will be throwing “cannonballs” (fuzzy balls) at the biologists to try to stop their mission. The object of the game is for the biologists to get all of the turtles to safety before they all get hit by the pirates.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Players are divided into two teams, the “marine biologists” (runners) and the “pirates” (throwers.)
- If a biologist is hit they must go back to Turtle Island. If they have a turtle in their possession they must return it to turtle island.
- Head and neck shots do not count
- The only way a stranded biologist can be rescued is for a teammate to get to the island safely and walk them back to the lab. NOTE: There are free walk backs.
- A biologist may only save one turtle or rescue one stranded teammate at a time (*they must choose)
- The biologists can only dribble the turtle eggs, they may not be passed or hit (ball should maintain contact with the field hockey stick)
- The hula-hoop is a safe zone where the biologist is protected from the pirates and their cannon balls
- The game ends when all turtles have been rescued or all biologists are stranded on Turtle Island
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Variation: For older groups consider making the playing field larger and smaller for younger groups.
