Innovation Hour
Slime with Borax Activity
Materials Needed (per 10 campers):
5 cups white glue
1 cup water (for glue mixture)
1 cup warm water (for borax mixture)
2 teaspoons borax powder
Food coloring or dyes (variety of colors)
Glitter, beads, foam balls (optional decorations)
Large bowl, spoons, measuring cups
Zipoc baggies
Objective: Campers will create customizable, colorful slime, encouraging creativity, sensory exploration, and a basic understanding of chemical reactions.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Introduction (5 minutes)
Explain the activity, highlighting creativity, sensory fun, and simple chemistry.
Discuss safety guidelines (no tasting, keeping ingredients away from eyes).
2. Demonstration and Making (10 minutes)
In a large bowl, combine 5 cups of glue with 5 cups of water, stirring well. (less water makes the slime firmer)
In a separate container, dissolve 2 teaspoons of borax in 1 cup of warm water to create slime activator.
Gradually pour the borax solution into the glue mixture, stirring continuously until slime forms.
Let campers assist in adding glitter, beads, or foam balls.
3. Exploration and Sharing (20 minutes)
Distribute slime equally to campers.
Allow campers to explore the texture, stretchiness, and color of their slime.
Add food coloring or dye or fun beads to the glue mixture and mix thoroughly.
Encourage campers to describe and showcase their slime creations to peers.
4. Clean Up (5 minutes)
Place slime in labeled containers or plastic bags for campers to take home.
Clean workspace promptly and thoroughly wash hands.
Assessment:
Observe camper engagement, creativity, and teamwork.
Conduct a short group discussion on favorite moments and what they learned.
