STORYLINE
Today we are playing World Cup. In this game, the goal is to keep the ball in possession and score a goal.
INSTRUCTIONS
- I will divide the class into teams of two.
- I will choose one student to begin as the goalie.
- Before the game begins, decide with your team which country you will represent.
- When I say, “GO!” teams will begin competing against each other to score a goal.
- If the ball is kicked out-of-bounds or a goal is made, the goalie will throw the ball back into the game.
- Take a seat on the sidelines if your team scores a goal and wait to play in the next round.
- The last two teams competing will not advance to the next round and will sit the rest of the game on the sidelines.
- The winner of the World Cup will be the last team remaining.
Game 1: Play as indicated above.
Variation: If the game is moving slowly, add a second ball.
TEACHING TIPS
- Approach: Depending on class size, create teams of three.
- Approach: Divide teams based on athletic ability.
- Approach: Consider enforcing a passing rule before scoring (must pass to your teammate before scoring) if not all students are participating.
